If you have information about any crime, phone the police on 101 or you can call anonymously to the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111. For general information about Neighbourhood Watch nationally see the www.ourwatch.org.uk website.

Since coming to the UK in the early eighties, Neighbourhood Watch has evolved into wider regional associations and finally a co-ordinated National network. Making your neighbourhood safer is partly about increasing security. but it's also about reducing the incentive to commit crime.

Every community is different but it is proven that you are four times less likely to be a victim of burglary if you are in a scheme. Also it is possible to obtain up to 15% off home insurance if you live in a Neighbourhood Watch area.

Security measures can include no cold calling zones, key holder schemes, and home security drives. The public are the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood. Community intelligence still remains one of the most effective weapons in targeting criminals.

ü   Spring is just around the corner promising lighter evenings and warmer days. The majority of thefts are opportunistic and burglars are increasingly targeting sheds and outbuildings as well as homes.

ü   When working in the garden, unlocked doors and windows are an easy and open invitation for an intruder. Remember the front of the house is just as vulnerable as the back.

ü   Get a strong padlock for your shed.

ü   Don't leave ladders outside.

ü   Trees and overgrown bushes provide excellent cover for unwanted visitors.

ü   Security lighting will deter most intruders but don't annoy your neighbours with a strong beam left on for hours!

Avon and Somerset Police are launching a new pilot scheme in West Somerset that will see both two and four legged volunteers. Thought to be the first of its kind in the country, 'Rural Community Watch' will see volunteers proactively patrolling their communities on horseback for any suspicious activity, criminal damage or anti-social behaviour, and providing feedback to the Police.
